And here we are today, I went on, in the very theatre in Berlin where the Kaiser had sat, where Hitler had sat up in that box, I pointed and we are making a play together, a Adidas Gazelle Og Maroon Suede Leather Mens Trainers
It was the horse and the boy they cared about, the yearning for them to come though, to find one another in the midst of all this suffering. Then, just a year or so ago, War Horse went to Germany, where the First World War Adidas Gazelle Mens Trainers Uk is most certainly remembered but not from our perspective. They remember it more as the precursor to the Hitler war. I found myself standing on the stage in the Theater des Westens in Berlin, talking to the young Germans in the cast and crew of War Horse "Gefhrten" they called it, or "Comrades". I spoke of the origins of the story in pastoral Devon, and about the First World War as seen from our side of the English Channel. I read to them from the poems of Adidas Gazelle Og Maroon Uk
a complex history when it comes to the First World War, there was concern that it might not be so well received, that sensitivities were too raw.
Owen, Sassoon and Thomas, and sung them the songs that Tommies sang. Almost 100 years ago, I told them, your soldiers, your great grandfathers went marching off to war, and ours did the same, as did the French and the Belgians, the Indians, the Africans, the Russians and the Italians, to fight one another in what was to prove the most piteous of all wars.
But it very soon became clear that Irish audiences understood at once that this was not simply about the First World War but about any war. In New York, War Horse won six Tony Awards and played for more than a year and a half at the Lincoln Center Theater, and then went on an extended tour of dozens of cities. Wherever they went, from Florida to California to Chicago, audiences loved it, and this in a country where the First World War is not considered a nation building war. But this did not seem to matter. They too sensed that this was not about that one rather distant war. They felt the same in Canada and Australia too: even though the First World War looms larger in their histories, this play wasn't looking back. It was about now as much as then, about reconciliation as much as war.
rkable though this is, it is not the first time that War Horse has trotted out and jumped cultural fences around the world. Neither is it an accident that the play, seemingly so British in its context, has been so warmly welcomed wherever it has been seen. It may be set against the background of the First World War and involve just three of the dozens of nations that were involved in the conflict France, Germany and Britain but it is readily understood by audiences everywhere that this is a story of the universal suffering of war. Its success in London has been huge, the most popular production the National Theatre has ever put on. Garlanded with awards, more than six million people worldwide have now seen it. It still plays in the West End years after it began. But this was on home territory, and in a way therefore not surprising. When it travelled to Ireland, a nation with Adidas Gazelle Junior Size 4
